Norton Desktop .INI Files You can find additional information about Norton AntiVirus and Norton Backup in NAVREAD.TXT and NBWREAD.TXT, respectively. 1. INSTALLATION ================ 1.1 Custom Install ------------------- Installing a custom version of NDW 3.0 over a previous full installation of NDW 1.0, 2.0 or 2.2 may result in tool icons on the Desktop that do not function correctly. For example, if the SmartErase tool was installed in a previous version but not in NDW 3.0, the SmartErase tool will still appear on the 3.0 Desktop but when you attempt to run it, you may get a variety of error messages because NDW 3.0 cannot find the utility's program files. 1.2 Virus-Checking Software ---------------------------- We recommend that you temporarily disable any virus software TSRs or device drivers from your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files before installing NDW. Since NDW's installation performs a virus scan, you will continue to be protected from virus activity during the install process. 1.3 Virus Detected During Install Scan --------------------------------------- If NDW finds a virus during installation, cancel the installation and run the DOS version of Norton AntiVirus (NAV.EXE) from the Fix-It Disk included in your Norton Desktop package. Remove or repair the infected file(s) and re-start the NDW installation. 1.4 NDW Directory in PATH Statement ------------------------------------ It is important that you let Install add the NDW directory to your DOS PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and that you reboot your computer after installation so that changes to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file take effect. 1.5 Network Installation ------------------------- If you run NDW from a shared network directory, you may want to install NDW 3.0 to a new subdirectory on your network. This will allow current users to continue using a previous version until you are prepared to switch them to the new version. After all users are set up to correctly access NDW 3.0, you can remove previous versions of NDW from your network. 1.6 NDWMAIN.EXE as Shell ------------------------- If you are running NDWMAIN.EXE as your shell and have not yet installed NDW 3.0, change your shell to NDW.EXE. If you installed Norton Desktop 3.0 while NDWMAIN.EXE was your shell, you will need to create the Norton Desktop Applications group. To do so: 1. Choose Quick Access from the list of windows in the main Norton Desktop Window menu to open the top-level Quick Access group. 2. Open a drive window and select NORTONDE.GRP from the Windows directory. 3. Drag NORTONDE.GRP from the drive window to the Quick Access window. You can then delete the NDW 2.x desktop applications group. 1.7 Installation over PCTools ------------------------------ If you install Norton Desktop over PCTools, the install program will be unable to create a Quick Access group for Norton Desktop Applications. To do this manually: 1. 1.8 Image Protection --------------------- During installation the following IMAGE command is added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: IMAGE C: Image is used by UnFormat and Format Recover (and a few other Norton programs) to restore accidentally formatted disks and diskettes. If you have drives other than C: to which you want to add Format Recover protection, you should add them to your IMAGE command in AUTOEXEC.BAT. For example: IMAGE C: D: E: 1.9 Sharing Violation ---------------------- If you encounter a sharing violation during the Norton Desktop installation process, you can recover from it by removing SHARE.EXE from your AUTOEXEC.BAT (or by not logging onto the network), if that is the source of SHARE. Then change your shell to Program Manager (change the shell= line in SYSTEM.INI to shell=PROGMAN.EXE) and reinstall Norton Desktop. You can then specify that Norton Desktop be made the shell during the installation procedure. 2. SECOND LOAD LINE ==================== NDW 3.0 has its own load line that is capable of loading programs during idle time, thereby reducing the time it takes to load Windows. By default, the Norton AntiVirus Windows TSR (NAVTSRW.EXE) is installed on the load line in the [Windows] section of the NDW.INI file. 3. NDW 2.2/3.0 PULL-DOWN MENUS =============================== NDW 3.0 lets you load different pull-down menus (in addition to being able to configure your own menus). The following menu files are installed into the NDW directory and can be loaded through Control Center's Menus category: DKTFULL.MNU Combined Desktop Menu (2.x and 3.0 features) DKTSHORT.MNU NDW 3.0 Short Desktop Menu DRWSHORT.MNU NDW 3.0 Short Drive Window Menu FULL.MNU NDW 2.x Full Menu SHORT.MNU NDW 2.x Short Menu 4. NORTON DISK DOCTOR FOR WINDOWS (NDDW) ========================================= 4.1 Acer BIOS Incompatibility ------------------------------ Some older ACER BIOS's (1990 or earlier) may be incompatible with Norton Disk Doctor for Windows (NDDW). We highly recommend that you create a Rescue Disk before running NDDW on any machine with an Acer BIOS. If NDDW doesn't complete normally on your Acer machine, use the Rescue Disk to restore your CMOS settings and contact Acer for a BIOS update. 4.2 Low Memory and Sound Files ------------------------------- If a WAVE or MIDI file is configured to play in the Options/Sound section of NDDW, it may not play during low memory conditions. 4.3 Low DOS Memory Conditions ------------------------------ NDDW requires differing amounts of low DOS memory depending on the size and complexity of your hard disk. If NDDW is unable to run, you may need to free up additional low DOS memory by unloading TSRs or running fewer applications. 5. SPEED DISK FOR WINDOWS ========================== 5.1 Low DOS Memory Conditions ------------------------------ SDW requires differing amounts of low DOS memory depending on the size and directory complexity of your hard disk. If NDDW is unable to run, you may need to free up additional low DOS memory. 6. UNERASE/SMARTERASE ====================== 6.1 Windows TEMP Directory Protection -------------------------------------- To recover files in the Windows TEMP directory, double-click on the SmartErase tool. From the SmartErase list, click the More button and use the SmartErase drive window to navigate to the TEMP directory and recover files. 6.2 SmartCan Installation -------------------------- By default, the SmartCan TSR is not installed. To install SmartCan protection, add the statement "SMARTCAN /ON" to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 6.3 ZIP Files -------------- When drive windows are configured to Show Zips As Directories, dragging the contents of a ZIP file from the drive window's file pane to the SmartErase tool will remove them permanently from the corresponding ZIP. They cannot be recovered with the UnErase program. 7. SHREDDER ============ 7.1 DoubleSpace, SpeedStor and Stacker --------------------------------------- Shredding files on compressed partitions created by DOS 6.0/6.2 DoubleSpace or by SpeedStor or Stacker will not overwrite the data stored in the CVF's sector heap. 8. SHARING VIOLATIONS ====================== If you experience sharing violations under NDW, they usually result from one of the following: CAUSE: SOLUTION: Change of Video driver(s) Delete ICOCACHE.DAT in the NDW directory Interaction between SMARTCAN Load SHARE before SMARTCAN in and SHARE the AUTOEXEC.BAT file with the /L:60 and /F:4096 parameters Diamond SpeedStar video Contact manufacturer for latest drivers drivers, load standard Windows VGA or SVGA driver temporarily Conflicts between SHARE, From Control Center, select SMARTCAN and American SMARTCAN category and add Heritage Dictionary *.SYS to the list of files NOT to be protected Sharing violations with Create a batch file to run AutoCad Release 12 AutoCad with SMARTCAN/OFF before the AutoCad program command and SMARTCAN/ON after the AutoCad program command 9. FILEASSIST =============== 9.1 Small Program Stack Sizes ------------------------------- FileAssist will not work with applications that have stack sizes less than 6K. 9.2 Hijaak Pro's Image Browser -------------------------------- NDW automatically disables FileAssist for this application due to incompatibilities. 9.3 Claris Works for Windows ------------------------------ FileAssist may cause focus problems in the File/Open dialog box. If this occurs, disable FileAssist for Claris Works by selecting the Config button from any Claris Works File/Open dialog box and checking the Disable FileAssist checkbox. 9.4 Unsupported Applications ----------------------------- The following is a partial list of applications that do not use Windows Common Dialogs, and therefore do not support the FileAssist feature: Adobe Illustrator Ami Pro 3.0 Approach CA:Simply Accounting CA:Textor CA:Realizer Caere Image Assistant Carbon Copy Dac-Easy Instant Rolodex Excel 3.0 FoxPro 2.5 FrameMaker 3.0 Harvard Graphics Lotus Organizer Micrografx Picture Publisher Micrografx Windows Draw Micrografx Graphics Works Micrografx Designer On Target Paradox QA+ for Windows Quattro Pro 1.0/5.0 RightWriter Rooms for Windows WordPerfect - All applications 10. FILE VIEWERS ================= 10.1 JustWrite & Q&A Viewer ---------------------------- NDW doesn't support copy-and-paste for this viewer. Also, if the font is changed while using this viewer, the font settings are retained only for the duration of the viewing session. 10.2 HEX Viewer ---------------- NDW doesn't support copy-and-paste for this viewer. 10.3 Third-Party Viewers ------------------------- During installation, NDW replaces any third-party viewer parsers in the NDW.INI file with its own viewer parsers for any file extensions that it supports. You may want to check your third-party viewer configuration and settings to set up any viewer parsers that may have been modified by NDW. 11. DAY PLANNER ================ 11.1 HP LaserJet "Error 20" and "Error 21" ------------------------------------------- On LaserJet printers with only 512K of memory, printing from Day Planner may cause an "Error 20" or "Error 21" message. This is due to higher memory requirements or more complex page output on some of Day Planner's default printouts. To correct this problem, you should try a different font, font style, or size, or a lower print resolution (150 DPI instead of 300 DPI) from Day Planner's Printer Setup Options. Also check the NDWINI.TXT file for information on how to permanently turn off Day Planner's shading options to reduce complexity and memory requirements. 11.2 "Unable to Create Pool File" Error ---------------------------------------- If you encounter an "unable to create pool file" error, check to be sure that Day Planner's default files are set to valid paths. Default files exist for Calendar, To Do List, and Phone Book. To determine their paths, choose Customize... from the Day Planner Options menu, then select the Toolbar category. The paths are shown in the Default Files group box. If the path is set to a network directory, be sure that you are logged in to the network. If the path is set to a directory on your local drive, make sure that the directory exists and was not deleted without revising the text boxes in the Default Files group box. 12. CD-ROM Drives ================== If NDW doesn't recognize your CD-ROM as a removable device, you need to install the Windows 3.1 CD-ROM driver. 1. Open Control Panel. 2. Choose the Drivers icon. 3. Click the Add button. 4. Select [MCI] CD Audio. 5. Click OK and follow the instructions. 13. General Software Incompatibilities ======================================= 13.1 WordPerfect 6.0 for Windows --------------------------------- WordPerfect 6.0 for Windows does not support launching a data file by double-clicking the file from the NDW drive window or from a Quick Access group window if WordPerfect is not already running. An alternative is to change the method WordPerfect uses to load an associated file: 1. Run REGEDIT.EXE. 2. Select WordPerfect Document (6.0) from the list of Registered File Types. 3. Choose Modify File Type from the Edit menu. 4. Move to the end of the Command text box, delete the "/ddeex" entry and add "%1" to the end of that line. And, of course, you can always print a WordPerfect document by running WordPerfect (launch the WordPerfect icon from the group window, for example) and opening the document within WordPerfect. Contact WordPerfect for further information. 13.2 Excel 4.0 for Windows --------------------------- Drag-and-drop printing may not work correctly with Excel 4.0 data files due to a possible problem with the registration database entry for Excel 4.0. If you experience this problem it can be corrected with the following steps: 1. Run REGEDIT.EXE. 2. Select Excel Worksheet from the list of Registered File Types. 3. Select the Print action button. 4. In the DDE section, change any references for [print?()] to [print()]. Otherwise, you may be able to print by dragging an Excel 4.0 data file to a printer icon but may have to confirm the print by clicking OK. 13.3 Icon Do-It ---------------- Icon Do-It will not change icons when NDW is the shell. Contact Moon Valley Software for an update or additional information about this problem. 13.4 Iconfetti and Wired for Sound ----------------------------------- The main Norton Desktop menu must be turned on in order for Iconfetti and Wired for Sound to work properly. If you have Wired for Sound 2.0, you may experience problems with some dialog box incompatibilities. Please contact Aristosoft for an upgrade. 13.5 Microsoft Encarta - 1994 Edition -------------------------------------- Because of 3-D Look-and-Feel issues, you must disable Norton AntiVirus before installing the 1994 Edition of Microsoft Encarta. After a successful installation, you may enable Norton AntiVirus again. 13.6 DOS 6.2 and DoubleSpace ----------------------------- DoubleSpace with DOS 6.2 defaults to auto-mounting compressed floppies. This causes several Norton programs to spin floppies at startup and when a list of available drives is created. To prevent this (assuming you are not compressing diskettes): 1. Exit Windows (press Alt+F4). 2. At the DOS prompt, run DoubleSpace by typing DBLSPACE. 3. Choose Options from the Tools menu (Alt+T, O). 4. Uncheck the Enable Automounting check box. 5. Choose OK and allow DoubleSpace to reboot your computer so the changes take effect. 14. NORTON DESKTOP INI FILES ============================= In addition to the NDW.INI file, Norton Desktop 3.0 creates a number of new INI files. INI file settings may be useful in a variety of situations and may correct problems not documented in this ReadMe file. Please refer to the NDWINI.TXT file in your NDW directory for details on all of NDW's INI files. ----End of ReadMe----
